by Marisol Getchell, Product Marketer @ GoCo - May 3rd, 2024

To celebrate Small Business Week (April 28-May 4, 2024), we’ve asked GoCo employees across the country to list some of their most beloved small businesses in their city.

Next up, we have Marisol Getchell, GoCo’s Product Marketer. Marisol first visited relatives in New Orleans when she was 4 months old and has been living there for the last 8 years.

Check out her small business recommendations below!

Good Eats

There is an endless supply of great food in New Orleans but here are a few places I especially enjoy:

1. For a Delicious & Unique Experience: Cure

Address: 4905 Freret St. New Orleans, LA 70115

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/curenola/?hl=en

“This cute, award-winning cocktail bar and restaurant pioneered the craft cocktail movement in New Orleans back in 2009. Over a decade later, Cure continues to be a hotspot for cocktails, ambiance, and great Happy Hour deals. I can promise that you’ll find the right drink for you amidst their 5+ page menu. My personal favorite is their classic daiquiri – and it’s only $6 during Happy Hour!”

2. For Authentic Chinese: Dian Xin

Address: 1218 Decatur St. New Orleans, LA

Website: https://www.dianxinnola.com/

“Dian Xin is my go-to for Chinese takeout (the in-person experience is quite nice as well!). Their soup dumplings are my favorite and travel surprisingly well. They have two locations very close to each other, so you’re guaranteed to get as many dumplings (and fried rice, noodles, Mongolian beef, and more) as you desire.”

3. For a Classic Po’boy (aka Poor Boy): Parkway Bakery & Tavern

Address: 538 Hagan Ave. New Orleans, LA 70119

Website: https://parkwaypoorboys.com/

“A New Orleans food list would not be complete without at least one Po’boy shop, and Parkway is one of my favorites. Parkway has a long history in New Orleans (they started business over 100 years ago!) and you can tell by the packed parking lot that people still love it. The lines move fast and their food is hot and delicious. I’m a big fan of their fried shrimp po’boys and fried pickles.”

4. For the Best Slice: Zee’s Pizza

Address: 3914 Baronne Street, New Orleans LA 70115

Website: https://www.zeespizzeria.com/

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/zeespizzeria/

“I grew up in Boston so I was totally thrilled when a Northeast-style pizzeria opened up in New Orleans. What started as a pop-up has transformed into a bustling brick-and-mortar pizzeria with the best pizza you can find in the Crescent City! Plus, they have weekly happy hours where you can save on slices, salads, and garlic knots.”

5. For Dessert: Lucy Boone Ice Cream

Address: 3918 Baronne Street, New Orleans LA 70115

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lucybooneicecream/?hl=en

“Right next door to Zee’s, you’ll find another delicious pop-up turned brick-and-mortar Lucy Boone Ice Cream. This small-batch ice cream shop is a great place to stop for dessert, with yummy flavors you’ve never seen before. This husband and wife team is so creative – they even do waffle cone tacos filled with ice cream for taco Tuesday!”

Gifts & Shopping

Whether you’re looking for something for yourself or trying to find a gift for someone back home, New Orleans has a myriad of shops and boutiques for you to visit.

6. For a Love Potion: Sassy Magick

Address: 1301 Decatur St. New Orleans, LA 70116

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sassy_magick_neworleans/

“New Orleans is a very spiritual city with many Voodoo and magic stores. Sassy Magick stands out with all the best products from candles and crystals to altar supplies, relics, and more. You can also get tarot card readings and reiki here, too!”

7. For a Quick Shopping Spree: Basics Underneath

Address: 5513/15 Magazine St. New Orleans, LA 70115

Website: https://www.basicsunderneath.com/

“Basics Underneath is THE spot to get all your lingerie, sleepwear, swim and activewear, and more! This woman-owned boutique carries all the best stuff. The amazing staff is so helpful, and the selection always blows me away.”

8. For Relaxation: Earthsavers Spa & Store

Address: 5501 Magazine St. New Orleans, 70115

Website: https://earthsaversonline.com/

“After you stop at Basics, stop in at Earthsavers just a few doors down. Whether you need a new skincare product, a luxurious robe, or have time for a spa service, believe me, you’ll walk out of Earthsavers more relaxed than when you entered. This is one of my favorite places to go to get Christmas or birthday presents – they never disappoint!”

Salons & Self Care

Treat yourself to some self-care and get fresh nails or hair!

9. For The Best Nail Art: Golden File Nails & Spa

Address: 4860 Tchoupitoulas St, New Orleans, LA 70115 (Uptown); 212 Magazine St Suite B, New Orleans, LA 70130 (Downtown)

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goldenfilespa/?hl=en

“Golden File in Downtown New Orleans was so popular they had to open a second location in Uptown! This appointment-based nail salon has the best service and best quality that I’ve found in New Orleans. I feel so taken care of here and always walk away with perfect nails. I HIGHLY recommend you find time to experience Golden File at least once.”

10. For A Fresh ‘Do: Abby Bordes Salon

Address: 4141 Bienville St, New Orleans, LA 70119

Website: https://abbybordessalon.com/

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/abbybordes/

“Abby specializes in all things hair – from hand-tied extensions and creative coloring, to inclusive haircuts, Abby is the best. She takes the time to fully understand what you want and can run with any inspiration you show her. If you’re picky about who you let touch your hair, I can promise you, Abby passes the test with flying colors.”

Great Tunes

I can’t talk about New Orleans without mentioning the music clubs and small businesses that bring this music city to life.

11. For a New Orleans Icon: Tipitina’s

Address: 501 Napoleon Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70115

Website: https://tipitinas.com/

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tipitinas/?hl=en

“Tipitina’s (or Tip’s as the locals call it) has been a landmark music venue pretty much since it was opened in 1977 by local music enthusiasts. Now owned by the band Galactic, Tip’s ensures great musical experiences are accessible to everyone 18 and older. And with Jazz Fest coming up, Tip’s is the place to be for late-night shows after a long day of festin’.”

12. For Music You Can Take Home: Euclid Records

Address: 3301 Chartres St, New Orleans, LA 70117

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/euclidrecordsnola/

“Euclid Records is a cute small business in the cozy neighborhood of the Bywater. They carry new and used vinyl as well as quality CDs and cassette tapes. Euclid also hosts in-store performances and the friendly staff is always available to chat about hip shows going on around town and all things music.”
